The line graphs depict the trends for percentage of households with electrical equipment and number of hours each week spent on washing clothes, preparing meals, and cleaning in one country over the period of 100 years.
It is clear that the proportion of electrical equipment rose considerably between 1920 and 2019. Whereas, the number of hours spent on house chores showed a significant fall over the same period.
In 1920, the ownership of washing machines was 40%, while the number of fridges and vacuum cleaners used in households stood at 0% and 30% respectively. A dramatic increase in both equipment was seen from 1920 to 1960, with fridges reaching 90% and vacuum cleaners rising to 70%. By contrast, by the beginning of 1980 washing machine users had dropped by roughly 8%, and in 2019, the number of households with this device rose once again, to nearly 75%.
Over the following 40 years the hours people spent doing housework fell dramatically, before remaining relatively stable between 1960 and 2019. By 2019, the number had less than doubled, to just over 10 hours per week.
