The tables below give information about sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries.
The tables compare sales of Fairtrade coffee and bananas in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden in the years 1999 and 2004.
It is clear that the UK had the highest sales of Fairtrade bananas in both years and saw a dramatic increase in turnover of Fairtrade coffee in 2004. While all five countries rose sales of coffee, only three out of five countries increased revenues of bananas.
In 1999, sales of Fairtrade coffee in the UK and Switzerland were 1.5 and 3 million euros. Over the following five years, these figures increased to 20 and 6 million euros, while sales of Fairtrade coffee in Denmark, Belgium and Sweden rose slightly to 2 million euros or lower in 2004.
In the year 1999, sales of Fairtrade bananas in the UK were the biggest and more than figures for all four other European countries combined, at 15 million euros. In the same year, revenues of bananas in Switzerland and Denmark were 1 and 0.6 million euros respectively. By 2004, sales figure for the UK had risen to 47 million euros, and sales of Switzerland and Denmark were 5.5 and 4 million euros. It is noticeable that Belgium and Sweden saw slight falls in sales to 1 million euros or lower in 2004.
