Eating sweet foods produces acid in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay. (High acid levels are measured by low pH values)
Describe the information below and discuss the implications for dental health.
You should write at least 150 words.
Allow yourself 20 minutes for this task.
The graph above illustrate the relationship between acidity in mouth and the time elapsed after eating sweet food in terms of fruit sugar, cane sugar and honey.
We can see clearly that from the moment of consumption to about 3 minutes later, the PH level were all above the safe standard(5.5), which will not do harm to our teeth.
With time passing by, the PH level of all three kinds of sugar/honey decreased rapidly, reaching the lowest point at around the 5th minute, approximately 3.5(cane sugar), 4.2(fruit sugar) and 4.8(honey) respectively. The biggest risk was brought by cane sugar, lowering PH level for the longest period of time, 30 minutes, followed by fruit sugar, about 20 minutes. Honey appears an even less risky substance. Though acidity falls to about pH 4.8 within five minutes of consumption, it returns to above pH 5.5 in under fifteen minutes.
This implicated that for the sake of out teeth health, it is better for us to choose the ingredients properly when eating sweet food. Honey is undoubtedly the best choice, while cane sugar should be avoided whenever possible.
