The table shows the rate of poverty in six types of family structure in Australia in 1999.
Overall, single-breadwinner families suffered from poverty more often than couples, and it can also be seen that family with children were more likely to be poor than those without. In terms of age distribution, the elderly was considerably less poor than other categories.
It is worth to take into consideration that families with single-mom or single-dad accounted for the most part in national poverty population, at 21%. This figure was slightly lower for single-no children family with the proportion of 19%. With regard to single-aged people, there was a significant difference compares to the mentioned groups, as those living in poverty only took up 6% in total households of the category.
At 12%, couples with children were above the average of poverty rate by 1%, whereas couples with no children were noticeably lower, at 7%. Old couples were considered the most economic-efficient group as their poverty rate was only 4%.
