The column graph compares the population in Iceland in terms of age during the period from 1990 to 2020.
Overall, it is clear from the graph that the number of people aged between 25 and 54 was higher throughout the years, while the figure for children, adolescents and young (0-24 years old) decreased gradually over the course of time. However, people aged over 55 years remained fairly the same in proportion during the 20-year period.
In 1990, the proportion of males and females in the age group 25-54 stood at just over 30%. Then, the figure increased over time and climbed to almost 50% in 2020. By contrast, the birth rate decreased gradually as the percentages for children and adolescence fell gradually from 25% in 1990 to just under 20% in 2020. A similar trend was seen in the 15-24 age group. This group accounted for more than 20% in 1990 then decreased gradually to fall under 10% in 2020.
However, men and women aged over 55 years and 65 years showed stability. These two groups combined accounted for approximately 21% of all people in 1990. The total figure was similar in 2000 though it increased slightly to 27% in 2010 and then decreased to 25% in 2020.
