Overall, spending on food accounted for the highest proportion in 1968 while in 2018, spending on leisure was highest. The percentage of spending on fuel and power was the lowest over the period shown.
In 1968, expenditure on food accounted for 35%, this figure was over double that in 2018. Over the following fifty years, the proportion of money spent on fuel and power, clothing and footwear, and personal goods also decreased. In 2018, the average weekly budget for fuel and power fell to under 5%. There was a significant decline in clothing and footwear, from 10% in 1968 to 5% in 2018. The percentage of the budget spent on personal goods was around 8% in 1968, this figure decreased doubled to approximately 4% in 2018.
Other goods and services saw different increases. Spending on leisure rose closely triple to 24% in 2018. In 2018, there was a considerable growth in housing to nearly 20%. The proportion of expenditure on transport climbed by about 7% over a fifty-year period. Only the budget spent on household goods remained almost unchanged, at around 8%.
