The bar char illustrates the proportion of households that owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the percentage of families would rather living in rented accommodation to have their own house during the first haft period, while the figure was opposite in the final years.
Looking at the chart in more detail, the proportion of families resided their owned accommodation was at the record high in the year 1918 accounted for over 75% while the owned houses were at just under a quarter. The figure for rented houses dropped significantly to 50% in 1971 instead of the stablility from 1939 to 1953 presented about 70%. On the contrary, the percentage of households in owned accommodation experienced an increase to 30% and maintained the value over the timespan of 13 years before rising to equal with the rented houses in 1971.
From 1961 to 2011, the household in owned accommodation rised and reached a peak of about 70% in 2001 before dropping to 65% at the end of the period. On the other hand, the percentage of families live in their owned houses decreased gradually with the figure of about 30% in the year 2001 and then steadily grew to more than 35% in 2011.
