The charts below show reasons for travel and the main issues for the travelling public in the US in 2009.
The first chart compares the figures for different reasons why people go out and the second chart shows the main problems worrying US citizens in 2009.
Overall, it is clear that most US citizens went out for commuting to work and the price of travel was the problem worrying them the most.
Looking at reasons for travel, the figure for people going out for commuting to work was the highest, at 49%, while the proportion of personal reasons accounted for 19%. In addition, the figure for US citizens going out for shopping made up 16%, while the percentages of recreation and visiting friends or relatives were 10% and 6%, respectively.
Turning to the main problems making them concerned when they went out, the cost of travelling became the most popular issue, making up over a third. Following this, the two least concerns were safety and aggressive drivers with 19% and 17% respectively, while the proportion of highway congestion accounted for nearly 15%. In contrast, there was a small portion for access to public transport as well as space for pedestrians, standing almost a tenth.
