The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040.
The line graph compares the proportion of people residing in cities in Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia over a 70-year period.
It is clear that there are significant increases in the number of city residents in four Asian countries between 1970 and 2040. While Philippines saw a slight decrease in certain years, figures for the three other countries went up steadily throughout the period shown.
In 1970, percentages of the population living in cities in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia were 30%, 18%, and 14% respectively, whereas Philippines had the biggest number of city dwellers, at around 31%. Over the following 20 years, these figures increased gradually. By 1990, the number of people in cities in Philippines had risen by approximately 17%, equivalent figures were 14%, 11%, and 10% for the others in the same year.
Between 1990 and 2020, while the percentages of the population living in cities in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia increased considerably, Philippines saw a slight fall. Thailand had around 30% of population in cities, about 50% for Indonesia, and the largest number was roughly 75% for Malaysia in 2020. At the end of period, all four Asian countries are expected to rise their city dwellers.
