As transparent from the statistics, the total amount of atmospheric pollutants demonstrates a downward trend during the researched timescale. Also noteworthy is the fact that, industry maintained and strengthened its position as the major producer.
In 1990, the total volume of air pollutants in the uk was staggering 7 million tonnes. it dropped to 4 million tonnes in the following 9 years, the steepest plunge since the start of 1990. After that, it sustained a period of deterioration, ending at just over 3 million tonnes.
In the beggining, industry accounted for the lion's share with practically 5.5 million tonnes and then it took a nosedive in the eyar 1996 roughly 3 million tonnes. By the end of the period, industry witnessed a marginal decline and produced around 2 million tonnes harmful substances in the air.
In contrast, the rates of transport and households remained consistant at 1 million tonnes in the initial year. The data on transport experienced little change until last year while the number of households' material falling to lows not seen since 1990, trough of 0,1 million tonnes in 2005.
