This line graph illustrates the amount of goods transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by various types of transportation methods. The quantity is measured in millions tonnes.
Initially in 1974, more than 70 tons of goods were transported to the UK on the road while around 40 million tons were transported via water and rail transportation. The least quantity of goods was transported in pipelines in this same year. Over the years, the quantity transported via road gradually increased with slight changes and reached around 100 million tonnes in 2002. Similarly, goods transported by water rose slowly until it reached around 52 millions tons in 1994. Afterwards it declined in 1998 and finally reached to around 62 million tons in 2002. In contrast, the amount of goods transported by rail modes fluctuated during the period to finally reach 41 million tonnes in 2002. Finally, goods carried by pipeline kept increasing over the years to reach over 20 million tons in 2002.
In general, there was a major increase in the amount of goods transported by all four types; road, water, rail, and pipeline.
