The table below shows the monthly expenditure of an average Australian family in 1991 and 2001.
Overall, it is clearly seen that the amount of money spent on some kinds of commodities increased over the year and most of the expenditure went for food.
A closer look at the statistics reveals that in 1991, the average quantity of money spent on food each month was top-charted at 155 dollars, far exceeding the following figure. In the subsequent decade, the Australian witnessed a slight rise by 5 dollars in the money spent on food. It is observed in the table that the expenditure on housing was higher than that of electricity and water by a wide margin, with the disparity of virtually 20 dollars. The figures then both followed upwards trends with the latter at 120 and its counterpart at 100 dollars.
In contrast, from the initial figure of 70 dollars, the money invested in transportation underwent a dramatical decline to merely 45 dollars. Likewise, there was a modest reduction by 10 dollars in the amount of expenditures on clothing, making it the lowest position.
