Dog Breeding

Essay topics:

Dog Breeding

The passage and the lecturer both are about the effects of dog breeding. The author presents points that show how it contributed to improving the dog breeds and welfare of the dog. The lecturer believes otherwise and gives arguments for each point.

To begin with, the author mentions that the intentional mating of some dogs with special abilities to encourage the same in upcoming generations has helped to improve dog breeds. Dog breeders apply scientific techniques to produce purebred dogs with the required qualities. The lecturer challenges this point by saying that most dog breeders lack the scientific understanding and ethics required to produce fruitful results with new dog breeds. Many of them merely exploit the field for monetary gains. These so-called "backyard breeders" raise the dogs in their backyard and earn money by selling them to unsuspecting people.

Secondly, the author points out that professional breeders love dogs and care about them. Careful selection of dogs to mate leads to better appearance, performance, and health. The lecturer's counterargument to this point is that profit weighs higher than welfare for many breeders. Additionally, the development of purebreds leads to inbreeding, which in turn leads to various genetic disorders in the produced dog breeds. For instance, overuse of a male dog of a certain breed with desired qualities to mate and produce new dog breeds may result in the widespread of genes containing harmful traits. Consequently, the new breeds of dogs might develop problems such as bone issues, heart conditions, and deafness. Similarly, the overpopulation of unwanted dog breeds is due to the proliferation of puppy meals and their advertisement through the media.

Lastly, it is noted in the passage that culture, dog shows and media spur public appreciation of different breeds. These shows and social media educate people about their suitability in terms of various contexts and encourage responsible dog ownership. The lecturer rejects this point and notes that canine clubs and associations add to the genetic diseases of purebreds while killing mix breed dogs in shelters. According to the speaker, popular culture may be counterproductive sometimes. For example, the film 101 Dalmatians resulted in the dogs of that breed being dumped in a shelter after people found out that puppies are not as cute as they are shown in the movie.

To sum up, the author believes that dog breeding has a number of advantages including improved health, welfare, etc. while the lecturer believed that breeding may be dangerous and presents arguments to challenge each point made by the writer.
