Painting

Essay topics:

Painting

While the passage provides evidence that the painting 'Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet' was not Rembrandt's creation the lecture expresses a different point of view

First, the passage highlights the inconsistency regarding the way woman is dressed in the portrait and hence, states that the painting is not made by Rembrandt. This is evident from the example the linen hat worn by the woman is of the kind only worn by servants and the coat with a fur collar poses a luxurious look. On the contrary, the lecture claims that that fur collar in the coat was not part of the original painting. Instead, was added on top after 100 years the painting was made. Supposedly, to increase the value of the painting

Second, the passage states that the light and shadow work of the painting is poor. This is supported by the statement that the fur collar worn by the woman should absorb the light. However, the face of the woman is illuminated. Such mistakes were not expected from Rembrandt. On the other hand, the lecture reveals that due to the later imposition of fur collar, the light is not in sync with the clothes claiming that Rembrandt had not created the painting

Lastly, the passage asserts that on examining the back of the painting it was found that the panel was made up of several pieces of wood glued together and Rembrandt often did not use such glued panels. The lecture states that the glued wood panels were result of addition of fur collar proving that the painting was not made by Rembrandt
