Possible Application of Airships
Both the article and lecture discuss the possible application of airships in place of airplanes or helicopters. Whilst the author of the article claims that the airships are advantageously mentioning three specific reasons, the lecturer contends the author claims simultaneously. In his opinion, the airships, though beneficial, have limited advantages over the other mentioned means of air transportation which is discussed in the subsequent paragraphs.
The author, in the reading, begins by mentioning that rather than using an engine for both the vertical and horizontal movement, airships tend only to use engines for horizontal movement only. Consequently, airships consume less fuel depicting it as cost-economic air transportation. The lecturer, however, refutes the particular position of the author maintaining the inadequacy of gases required for the vertical lift. The lighter than air gases: hydrogen and helium, employed in the airships for the vertical have diverse disadvantages. Hydrogen has the high capability to catch the fire quickly supported by several tragic accidents in the past whereas helium being safe to hydrogen, is not easily accessible for regular usage. Additionally, the speaker mentions the lower vertical lifting power of the gas to support his claim.
The writer further asserts that airships are favorable in difficult locations such as forests which requires limited space as compared to the requirement of a long runway for the airplanes and the capability of the helicopters to carry a small amount of the weight. On the other hand, the speaker questions the claim made by the writer mentioning the ascendance and descendants of airships must be slower and careful in such areas. Thus, it will be a laborious task to maintain the balance of the airships specifically in the windy conditions where accidents from the collision with trees are highly probable.
Further, the article mentions that airships can be a feasible medium in exchange for the satellite to carry out military operations. The article adds that airships aid not only in transporting the paramount telecommunication equipment and other surveying necessities but also maintains significantly cheaper costs. As opposed to the article’s opinion, the lecturer posits that the airships can be reached up to 14Km above the earth's surface where the movement of the wind is abundant. As result, it needs a greater amount of fuel to resist the wind forces acting on it. On top of that, he adds because of the higher fuel usage it is necessary for the airship to return to the surface frequently which makes its application inefficacious.
To summarize, the writer and the speaker have opposing viewpoints on the benefits of airships. On this topic, it's evident that they'll have a hard time finding common ground.
