Summarize ideas in listening and reading

The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about the zebra mussel, whether they are a threat to North America's freshwater fish or not. In this respect, the writer provides three reasons why these species can be unstoppable dominants of these areas. On the other hand, the lecturer contradicts this idea, claiming there are ways to control the spread of zebra mussels, therefore they are not serious threats.
First, both the passage and the lecture talk about the tremendous ways these species can spread. In this respect, the author talks about the unstoppable invasion of these species, using the ship's bottom. However, the lecturer states that the reason people couldn't control the spread of them in Europe's water was because of not having enough knowledge about them. Moreover, she explains how with the usage of saltwater and ocean, their growth in freshwater can be limited.
Secondly, the writer discusses zebra mussels are able to dominate their habitat without any predators feeding on them. Conversely, the lecturer repudiates this notion. He declares it might be true that they can become dominant at the beginning, but after a while, other animals will eat them. As an example, he explains how local birds in Europe started to feed on zebra mussels. Also, he emphasizes the birds' ability, claiming they can eat a lot and utterly stop the high rate of reproduction of these species.
Finally, the author mentions the effect of zebra mussels on the overall fish population and competition for nutrients with other fish. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this idea. In this vein, he mentions although they can have negative effects on some species, they can have positive impacts on other types of fish. As an instance, he asserts how bottom freshwater fish benefit from them, and their population can increase.
