TPO 42

The reading passage lists three possible solutions to prevent injuries of birds when they collapse into windows while the professor in the lecture thinks none of these solutions is effective.

The first solution the professor argues is that the one-way glass cannot solve the problem because of they just like mirrors that can reflect things. Birds who do not understand mirrors would think the sky and trees in mirrors are real and then fly into the windows. That is to say, the claim in the reading that replacing the transparent glass with one-way glass can protect birds is not convincing.

Secondly, the reading holds the view that adding some colourful designs, like thin stripes, can alert birds there are objects. The professor, however, mentions that this kind of small decoration will leave the opening area which is a hole in birds' eyes. In that case, birds will not avoid it, too. Although a larger design may be effective, it will darken the room. Thus, the professor fights against the view in the reading again.

Furthermore, the professor represents his idea that artificial magnetic field is only used by birds in long-distance trips. They use magnetic field when they migrate and use eyes in the short-distance fly. So, it will not have effect for birds flying within or between cities, which is far from the suggestion in the reading that by emitting magnetic signals, people can manipulate birds' flying directions.
