The lecture and the reading both discuss about hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine. While the reading states that hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine is a prominent option for internal-combustion engine substitution, the lecture refutes this, saying that fuel-cell engine is not promising as the reading said.
The author argues that petroleum as an internal-combustion fuel is limited, but hydrogen is an available fuel which is available in different forms of sources. Furthermore, the lecturer believes that hydrogen is not an available fuel; the hydrogen in water is not usable. Besides, the production and storage of hydrogen in pure liquid form requires high laboratory technology.
According to the writer, since the fossil fuel combustion produce carbon dioxide, a clean gas like hydrogen is the answer to air pollution. On the other hand, the professor says that the process of hydrogen production leads to air pollution; for purification, fuels like coal and oil should be burnt. Besides, factories that make fuel-cell cars would contaminate the air.
Finally, the reading claims that hydrogen will be more economical than petroleum; since people pay less money over fuel-cell cars than internal-combustion cars. The speaker in the listening is disagree with the passage. She says that manufacturing the fuel is expensive; in addition, fuel-cell cars will be high-priced because hydrogen needs a costly material named platinum for its combustion reaction. On the other hand, other materials won’t react with hydrogen as sufficiently as platinum.
