Tablets in the Classroom
The Author fully suports the idea of replacing the textbooks in classroom with tablets, while the Speaker opposes this position by dismissing the Authors claims based upon the cost, health benefits and on the influence on learning.
The Writers first argument is based on the cost of textbooks. Reducing the printing of textbooks can save up to 8 billions to a government, because the ebooks cost up to 60% less. However, the Speaker implies that ebooks may be cheaper, but the implementation of such system demands purchase of softwaers and hardwares for the learning platform; Wi-Fi network needs to be established and teachers needs to be educated about this new approach of learning. If the cost of the implementation and introduction of this system costs more than printing the textbooks, then the tablets are not as economical as the Author suggested.
Not only economical but also health benifits are cited by the Writer as a good reason to introduce the tablets into schools. Heavy textbooks can cause back problems. Both of the ciropratrical exams and back pain can be avoided just by usage of tablets. Never would the Lecturer support such a statement, remaking that tablets can cause more severe health problems, such as computer vision sindrom. As there are other health problems caused by daily use of tablets, then they are not as health beneficial as the Writer had cited.
If both economical and health beneficial arguments are not convincing enough, the Essayist would replay upon the teaching experience. Tablets are great helping tool to teachers, they enrich classroom education and they make it easier for teachers to provide homework, assignments and test for students. On the other hand, the Lecturer reveals that tablets can be a distraction for students because of the variety of content: apps, games, emails for a student to focus on. So if the students would rather read emails than to pay an attention to a teacher, then he tablets are not increasing teaching experience as the Essayist predicts.
Through contradictory arguments, the Speaker casts doubt on the validity of the Authors claims centred upon economic and health benefit, and on impact on learning experience.
