The first chart below shows the results of a survey which sampled a cross-section of 100,000 people asking if they travelled abroad and why they travelled for the period 1994-98. The second chart shows their destinations over the same period.
The reasons of why UK residents visited overseas during a four-year period is presented In the table while the second chart shows the destinations of UK visitors.
In the initial year, majority of UK residents travelled abroad for holiday purpose as much 15,246, and Western Europe was the most destination. This contrasted to those who visited abroad for other reasons, accounting for 982 residents while people visited overseas for business and family trips were close fairly with 3,155 and 2,689 respectively. The number of voyagers going to North America showed by the lowest with 919, and this might be because the UK travellers preferred to explore other areas with 1,782.
Between 1995 to 1997, the figure for nearly all motives of why UK residents travelled overseas saw a marked increase with total 21, 610 and 24, 949 respectively, and Western Europe was still favourite destination while other destination countries had visited almost doubled, from 1,782 to 2,227. Eventually, a rise of 5,454 for having holiday by UK citizens was by far the highest while less than 1,000 such people were more likely to travel with another reason. After a four-year period, Western Europe was by far the most popular destination with total 24, 519 while the number of UK residents visited North America hit the lowest (1,823).
Overall, there were several purposes of going abroad by UK travellers, and majority travelled for holiday. This made a significant rise of those who visited Western Europe while the gap among the other destination countries had widened.
