Long ago, in 1996, a fossil skeleton of a kind of dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx was discovered in Liaoning, China. The bones in fossil had some fine lines. Both the passage and the speaker debate on whether these lines represent feathers or not. the author opposed the idea that these lines are evidence of feather. However, the lecturer finds all the reasons dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the passage argues that fine lines doesn’t relate to a functional structure of a living dinosaur, and can be formed because of decomposition after it's death. Conversely, the speaker mentions that the fossils of other types of animals at the same site don't include these fine lines, thus, these lines are not the result of skin fibers.
second of all, the author holds the view that even if these lines are remains of a dinosaur, the place of the structure in body is not clear, and it is more acceptable to be remains of frills. on the contrary, the lecturer underlines the fact that there is a chemical difference in frills and feathers, which is a protein named Beta-keratin. the frills don't include it, and after analysis it is observed that the fossils include this protein, So it is more likely to be feather.
eventually, according to the reading, feathers have function in flight and thermoregulation. with due attention to the place of the fine lines in the fossils, mostly located near the tail and backbone, the writer believes these lines don't represent feathers. On the other hand, the professor asserts that feathers have other functions. she exemplifies, display function, in which some kind of birds use these feathers to attract mate. Moreover, the analysis of the fossils which were beautifully preserved by volcanic ash, suggests that the birds were colorful, and this supports the idea of display function.
all in all, the passage believes that these lines don't represent feathers. in the contrast, the lecturer rejects whatever mentioned in the reading through citing aforementioned reasons.
