Airships
Both the reading and the lecture are about the merits and demerits of airship. The author of the reading suggests that airships have more benefits as compared to airplanes and helicopters. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on the points made in the reading. According to him, these evidences are faulty, and does not support the author`s point.
First of all, the author states that airships utilize little amount of fuel because airships use balloons for vertical lift instead of engines. While the lecturer agrees that airship use less fuel, but they require special gases that should be lighter than air to perform vertical lift. These gases include hydrogen and helium, but they have their own problems. Moreover, he mentions that hydrogen has the ability to catch fire rapidly, and this causes many airship`s accidents in the past. On the other hand, helium is safer, but is difficult to obtain and quite expensive. And also, helium does not have enough lifting power.
Secondly, the author presents one more advantage of airship is that they can reach anywhere because they do not need any specific platform. In addition, airships have the capability to carry heavy loads. While the lecturer refutes these points. He says that to pick up heavy loads like tree logs, airships have to come down , pickup loads, and rise again. Furthermore, airships need to be in a steady state to ensure safe pickup, but it is very hard to remain in steady state due to weather conditions.
Finally, the author claims that airships can serve as satellites, and play a role in telecommunication because they can rise in higher position and stay there. On the other hand, the lecturer points out that they are not ready to serve as satellites as airships have to rise 14 km above the surface, but that is hard for them due to the strong winds. However, airships need to spend fuel to resist strong winds. Airships at this height first use fuel, then descend, and again refuel as they need to carry out telecommunication services. This uninterrupted surface is not better that satellites.
