The graph below gives information about U.S. government spending on research between 1980 and 2008.
The line graph illustrates the US government's research expenditure in 5 subjects, which is measured in billion-dollar from 1980 to 2008.
Overall, while the health has the highest amount of research budget, the figure for general science is under the other subjects over the period.
The money spent on health studies stood at 8 billion dollars in 1980 and decreased minimally to 7 in the next four years although it is still higher than other figures. It then increased dramatically to reach a high of 22 billion dollars in 2004 following a slight drop to 17 at the end of the period. However, there is a moderate rise in the spending on space and general science research. Beginning from 6 billion dollar, the space figure peaked at just under 10 in 2008, and similarly, general science rose from 3 billion dollars to 5 billion at the same time.
In contrast to the former changes, the energy research budget only saw a slight fluctuation over the period as well as the other category. 5 billion dollars invested on energy research in 1980 and stayed constant until 1992. It thus fluctuated between 5 and 8 billion dollars and ended at 7 in 2008. The graph of other research dropped gradually from 7 to 5 billion dollars until 1980, experienced a rise and fall and ended to 5 in 2008.
