Spartacus
Spartacus, a leader known for his fights against Romans, is a symbol of honor for common people and also for many historians. The essay enumerates three famous stories about Spartacus and his men, making him an appealing and popular hero. However, the lecturer contradicts the ideas mentioned by the author by casting doubt on the accuracy of stories.
To begin with, the passage offers that Spartacus is famous since everyone can relate to him and have a sense of sympathy toward his story. In fact, Spartacus wanted to return to his homeland. So, he started to fight the Romans in order to defeat them and find a way back home. On the other hand, the lecturer claims Spartacus could have escaped from Romans, but he did not take the opportunity. She believes that Spartacus was motivated but other incentives such as wealth or taking harsh revenge.
In addition, the author discusses another story regarding Spartacus's fighting skills. This story depicts him as a brave and admirable man as he fought against Roman's army of thousands only by his small, ill-equipped army. In contrast, the lecturer recalls another version of this story. She posits that Spartacus is not necessarily a genius due to the fact that Romans did not take him seriously at first and send a small army to defend their city. After being defeated by Spartacus's army, they sent their unique army, and they were successful in defeating him.
Last but not least, the author speculates that Spartacus was praised by people since he liberated Roman slaves. In his quests, he rejected the offer from Romans to be a senator. By doing so, Spartacus showed the world that he valued human rights and the idea that all people are the same. In this way, he gained reputation and respect among people. Despite that, the author's stance is that this story is not backed by historical evidence. She argues that writers and historians made this story up in the eighteenth century. Historians at that period used this inspirational story to attract people and persuade them to participate in anti-slavery movements at that period.
