A glance at the chart reveals that whereas in rural areas, the population showed no changes, the number of global population from 1950 to 2020 in urban areas exhibited an upward trend and is predicted to keep raising until 2040, hence the rise in total population. In terms of age groups, while the number of people from 15 to 65 years old was on an upward trajectory and is expected to raise significantly until 2040, that of people under 15 or over 65 was relatively consistent and will remain unchanged in the future.
As presented in the first chart, in 1950, the population of rural and urban area are nealy the same, at around 5%. Until the present day, while the proportion of people in rural ares hovered around 5%, that in urban areas rose significantly by 5% each year and reaches 25% in 2020. The urban population is predicted to increase enormously to nearly 40% in 2040, whereas rural population will remain stable around 5%. As urban population rose, the total population increased as well. In 2040, the total population is expected to reach almost 45%.
In terms of age structure, in 1950, while the percentage of people under 15 and over 65 was under 5%, that of people between 15 and 65 years old accounted for 6%. The global population under 15 years old experienced a slight increase to 5% in 1960, and then hover around this stage for the next 60 years. In 1960, the proportion of people over 65 exhibited a minimal fall but then rose fractionally to 5% in 1980 and remained stable until now. On the other hand, the population in labouring age group increased significantly to over 30% in the presentday. While the proportion of people under 15 and over 65 is expected to hover around 5%, that of people from 15 to 65 is projected to rise slightly to 35% in 2040.
