Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading material and lecture both center on the topic of whether or not to send people from Earth to an asteroid for a choice of colonization. While the passage considers this a practical option, the lecturer stands against this idea by presenting three counterarguments. First of all, the passage suggests that the gravity on asteroids are low due to their considerably smaller sizes compared to planets, which provides several benefits. Spacecrafts can land easily and safer, and they can also be loaded with more apparatus; besides, they can also depart from an asteroid more readily. On the other hand, the speaker disproves the points made in the passage by presenting several risk factors brought forth by the lower gravity. First, the muscles of people who land on asteroids may not be sustained, which may become detrimental to their health. Second, the reduced gravity would actually bring the their bone density down to a level the may result in problems with their health condition. Secondly, the reading proposes that colonizing on asteroids can have valuable outcomes, including precious metals that in the asteroids. These metals can make the trip worthwhile by mining the resources from the asteroids. In contrast, the lecturer counters the idea in the passage by insisting that it may seem lucrative to mine the minerals from the asteroids, the augmented costs may lower the profits. For example, the costs of transport and mining the valuable metal resources on the asteroids may result in extra costs that bring the overall profits down. Also, if the amount of metals being mined from these asteroids is significant, there may be another issue regarding the price; if the amount is great, then the market price of the metals would actually diminish. Lastly, the reading puts forth another advantage of landing on asteroids. The passage mentions that reaching the asteroids is an easy since they are in periodic motion, so spacecrafts can seize the proper time period when the asteroids are close to the Earth to land on them. This can make the trip to asteroids easier and less costly. However, the speaker argues that although it is easily approachable, the trip back to Earth might be challenging. The reason is that these asteroids may travel with an unusual orbit path that sometimes they may travel to even farther away than the distance between Mars and Earth. In other words, the asteroids do not simply stay put. This would not be an ideal option for spacecrafts when they plan to return to the Earth.
