Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific theories presented in the reading passage.
The reading passage claims that there are three possible explanations about what happened at the end of the Triassic period and caused a mass-extinction event, yet the listening, considering the idea that each of the theory are is wrong, does not agree with the reading.
First of all, the passage claims that the fluctuating sea level resulted in the destruction of shallow-ocean species, which then caused a profound effect on food chains worldwide, leading to mass extinctions. However, according to the listening, the sea level at the end of the Triassic period is usually going down over several million years, and a gradual depressing change of the sea level can be adapted by the costal and shallow-ocean species. Unless the change of sea level is mush more sudden, it won’t have a widespread negative impact of the species. So, it will not result in the destruction of them. Therefore, the theory that the fluctuating sea level caused the extinction was denied.
Moreover, the passage holds the opinion that widespread volcanic activity caused atmospheric SO2 to rise, then devastated many species and led to the extinctions. On the contrary, the professor says in the lecture that the climate cooling caused by volcanic activity was a short period of few years when SO2 is in the atmosphere, and in the same time, these SO2 will combine with water, then change into rain, then be cleared out in the atmosphere so SO2 will not cause a long period cooling of the climate and a massive extinction. Thus, the theory is that climate cooling is also impossible.
Finally, the passage believes that an asteroid is blocked long enough for most plants to die and many animal species to then starve. On the other hand, as far as the listening is concerned, scientists were already determined a crater, and found out the crater was 200 12 million before the extinction, and it will be too long to not result in the extinction of plants and animals. Hence, the theory that an asteroid hit caused the mass-extinction is not a good explanation.
