The graph below shows the number of shops that closed and the number of new shops that opened in one country between 2011 and 2018.
The line graph details the trend of shop closures and openings of new shops in one particular country over a seven-year period, between 2011 and 2018.
In general, the number of shop closures ranged between 5000 and 6500 within the timeline (with the exception of 2015). However, that of openings were all over the map. Interestingly, both closures and openings became fewer towards 2018.
On the one hand, the number of shops closed started at roughly 6500 in 2011. Then, the figure fluctuated over the next 3 years but the general trend was positive, even taking over the number of shop openings. Despite falling dramatically to below 1000, it rebounded back to above 5000 rapidly in 2016. The number remained steady in the last 2 years, finishing the period.
If we look at the data for shop openings, there was a massive decrease by half from around 8500 to 4000 in the first year. It saw a consistent increase to over 6000 in 2014, followed by a drop to the same figure in 2012. Having remained stable until 2017, it dipped slightly to 3000 in the last year of the period.
