The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
The line graph represents how much carbon dioxide (CO2) each individual produced on average in four European nations between 1967 and 2007, with the data assessed in metric tons.
In general, the UK emitted the most CO2 throughout the period. Despite starting in second place, pollution in Sweden fell drastically and became the most eco-friendly on the list.
On the one hand, the UK held the highest average CO2 emissions (nearly 11 tons) in 1967. Having stayed constant in the first decade, the figure declined steadily to roughly 9 tons until 2007. Regarding Sweden, the quantity reached a peak at above 10 tons in the first decade. Since then, it hit a trough, going down to around 7 tons in 1987 and below 6 tons at the end.
By contrast, there was an upward trend in carbon pollution in the last 2 nations. For example, each Portuguese citizen was responsible for around 1.5 tons of CO2 in 1967. It saw an increase over the timeline, finishing at almost 7 tons, beyond thrice the initial data. This paralleled the growth in Italy, climbing approximately from 4 to 8 tons.
