The table below describes the number of employees and factories in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
The table reveals the changes in the number of two distinct groups of workers in gender and manufacturers in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901.
In general, whereas the number of employees showed a downward trend over the given period, the figure for factories grew significantly at the same time. In addition, the quantity of male employees remained almost higher than that of female ones, with the exception of 1861 figures.
At the beginning, the number of male worker stood at 207, 100, which was nearly double than that of female workers. Further more, 477, 100 employees were recorded in 1851, with a subsequent plummet of 705, 32 workers by the following ten year period. This was due to a dramatic drop in the quantity of male workers from 207, 100 (in 1851) to 131, 700 (in 1861) and the figure for female ones also witnessed a slightly decrease of 30, 000 at the same time, which was exceeded the former. Following that, the 40-year period from 101 to 1901 witnessed a gradual decline in the total number of employees to finish at 61, 000. In particular, the number of male and female workers decreased significantly to the similar extents, at 31, 000 and 30, 000 in respectively.
Otherwise, it is obvious that the number of factories started at 225, jumping to 600 over 50-year period, which was threefold than its initial figure.
