Essay topics: TPO-32 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading and passage both talk about a strange sound, quackers, that had been heard during the 1960s to 1980s years by the Russian submarines crews who patrolling at the North Atlantic. The author of the passage declares that the source of this sound moved with great speed and it was undetectable by the sonar of submarines. Three possible theory proposed about the cause of quackers by the passage. However, the lecturer, stats that all the mentioned theory are unconvincing and refuted them one by one.
First of all, the author holds the opinion that these odd noises were created by the male and female ocra whales during a courtship ritual. This theory is challenged by the lecturer. The professor points out that this theory seems believable at the first glance but, he mentioned that the ocra whale lived in the shallow water while the source of the sound was from the deeper part of the ocean.
Secondly, the passage proposed that the squids, the giant marine animals, which live in the deep part of the ocean are the other potential source of these sounds. it is mentioned that because they have the soft bodies it was hard for sonar to detect them. However, the professor put forward the idea that although the squids are the better candidate, they live now in that area while the sound does not exist. It is concluded that if the squids were the cause of that sound, the sound should be heard after that specific period of time.
Finally, according to the passage, the foreign submarines are the other possible source of this strange sounds. The lecturer, on the other hand, refuted this theory. The professor, hold the view that the source of the aforementioned sound moved around and its direction altered so fast while, the submarine, even those one manufactured now, do not have this ability to turn very fast while they motor have a low sound.
