TPO 39- At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species. It was this extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to become the dominant species for the next 145 million years. We do not know exactly what happened that eliminated so many species in a relatively short period of time, but there are several possible explanations.
The reading and lecture are both about extinction of all species at the end of Triassic period 200 million years ago. The author in the passage believes that there are three possible solutions to explain such phenomena. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the passage, saying that there are no good explanation to explain the mass extinction.
First of all, the author points out that the one explanation for this theory is drop in sea level. The article notes that fluctuation of sea level can cause the habitat of different species to be destroyed and also can affect the food chain that would lead to mass extinction. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that scientist agree that sea levels fluctuate over time. Furthermore, she argues that when sea level fluctuate the coastal shelf adapt to the ecosystem. In addition, fall of the ecosystem in the end of Triassic period were gradual and happened several million years ago and it would not affect the environment. Hence, when the sea level drastically dropped suddenly then negative impact can occur within the species and the ecosystem.
Secondly, the author contends that when volcanic activity occurred then sulfur oxide will be spread to the air leading to lowering of temperature of the environment, thus species cannot withstand harsh ecosystem causing their population decline. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that there are only short period of volcanic activity at that time. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that sulfur oxide is present in the atmosphere. As a result sulfur oxide will combine with water and fall into rain and there will be increase volume of sulfur oxide in the end of Triassic period causing mass extinction.
Finally, the author states that the theory involves asteroid strike. The article denotes that when they hit the ground of the earth, large soil and crushed rock will create crater on the surface. The debris will cause blocking of sunlight having the flora and fauna diminished. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that they are no asteroid crater found on the date of mass extinction. She puts forth the idea that the crater that was revealed were dated 12 million years before the extinction of all the species.
