The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given diagram shows the various processes involved in the production of electricity from the river's water using a hydroelectric power station. The pivotal structures in the process include a higher and lower level reservoir, a dam and lastly the main power station generator which produces the current and is distributed along power lines.
To begin, the initial source of water for the power station is the river. This water is stored in a high-level reservoir being held back and channelized by a dam. The flow of water from this dam to the downstream power station switches direction during the various times of the day. In the day time, the water flows downwards for electricity generation purposes and at night, it is pumped upwards back to the high-level reservoir. This opposite flow in water supply is possible using the reversible turbines that are present at the power station.
Once the water reaches the station during the day, the turbines present in the generator, rotate to manifest the desired power. This produced electricity is then transported to the national grid through power lines. The surplus water after the current production is then accumulated in a low-level reservoir which is then eventually pumped back up to the upstream, large capacity reservoir during the night.
