The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The diagram provides information about how hydroelectric power station produces electricity. Overall, the main task involves transfer of water between two major reservoirs, namely high-level reservoir and low-level reservoir and subsequently generating electricity. In general, the diagram is broadly separated in two stages, which is day and night stages respectively. This process is cyclic in nature and can be repeated.
First of all, the river water is collected at significantly greater height backed up by dam. There is an intake area, which opens during daytime, when river water gushes down the channel to the power station. Next, in the power station, the force of water operates the generator by turning the turbine, which in turns, generate electricity. The power lines are then channeled towards the National grid to supply electricity. During daytime, water is stored in low-level reservoir for storage purposes.
At night, this process is reversed and water is channeled to high level reservoir by pumping it and again storing it at height. This is done so that next day, the entire process can be repeated.
