According to the reading passage, it is better for humans to colonize asteroids than the Moon and Mars, for three main reasons. However the lecturer strongly argues against the reading passage by claiming that colonizing asteroids is not practical at all and all three benefits mentioned in the reading are questionable.
First and foremost, the reading passage claims that the low gravity environment of asteroids allows spaceships to land and take off easily, whereas the professor suggests otherwise. He says that low gravity on asteroids will pose a threat to human health. It is known from previous experience on spaceships that low gravity, even for a short time, will lower people's muscle mass and bone destiny. Long-term colonization on asteroids would be more problematic.
Furthermore, the reading suggests the asteroids are rich in valuable metals, which can be mined for profits and the cost can be covered. However, the lecture maintains that additional factors must be considered. For example, the cost of mining the metal and the transportation process will reduce the profit. Moreover, as the supply of metal resources increases, the price of them will go down. Hence, it is not guaranteed that the metals can be sold at the same price then.
Finally, according to the author, asteroids will be easy to access as they are closer to Earth than other the Moon or Mars is. The lecturer, however, explains that even though some asteroids are easy to reach, it might be difficult for human beings to return to Earth. To illustrate, the orbital paths of asteroids are unusual. At one point, asteroids may be close to Earth, but at other times, they will move away from Earth. Therefore, getting back to Earth will be a challenge even if we have settled on asteroids.
