Some people think children should have unlimited access to the internet. Others believe parents should supervise their children’s use of the internet. Which do you believe?
The internet has become one of the most important tools in people’s daily lives, including children. Regarding this, some people believe that children should have unlimited access to the internet. However, I personally think that children should have their parents supervising them while using the internet for two reasons: better health, and more understanding.
First and foremost, children’s health will improve if parents control their access to the internet. To be specific, by limiting their access to the internet, children will not only reduce their eyesight get worse due to their smartphone or computer, but also have more time doing other activities that will help them, such as doing their homework, or playing baseball with their friends. For example, my brother once used an excessive amount of time on the internet. His eyesight was bad, and he also had too little time for other activities. As a result, my mother had to control him by supervising what he was doing on the internet. It turned out that his eyesight became better as he used less smartphone, and his grades increased significantly. This clearly shows that children’s health will get better if parents keep in check with their children on the internet.
In addition, children and parents will understand each other more. In detail, by communicating with each other while parents supervise their children, each other will have an opportunity to talk to each other, resulting in a more understanding environment. An observational study held in 2019 at Boston university compared two groups of families: one who controlled their children accessing the internet, and one who did not. The results showed that there was 62% more communication between parents and children. This undoubtedly proves that if parents supervise their children, there will be more communication, resulting in a more understanding family.
Admittedly, some could argue that there will be less conflict, and children can readily obtain information if parents don’t have an eye on their children. However, as children’s health increases and more understanding will occur if parents limit their children, I personally state that children should have their parents watch them for excessive amounts of time on the internet.
