Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
It is sometimes argued that residing in a foreign country where one has to speak a different language can lead to serious social and practical problems. I am totally inclined to disagree with this idea due to some reasons.
With regard to rapid advancements in technology and the internet nowadays, I believe that this development can help mitigate potential social and practical challenges. Information about society and instructions can be searched online directly, and we can choose to look through them in our native language for better understanding. For instance, if we intend to join a particular party, we can research beforehand to familiarize ourselves with the expected conversations and proceedings, thus minimizing potential social misunderstandings and language barriers.
Furthermore, globalization offers people worldwide the opportunity to study and subsequently reside in foreign countries. Take the case of my friend Crystal, a typical college student among thousands, who once was an international student at UCLA, a well-known college for its academic success. Crystal improved her English-speaking skills throughout her undergraduate study. After graduation, she successfully lived and worked in Los Angeles without causing social and practical problems, instead, she gets along well with her foreign friends.
Nevertheless, a voice arises that not sounding native when speaking a foreign language might trigger serious social challenges. Ironically, this situation can be solved through practice, as practice makes perfect. Therefore, reflecting on our minor language errors can enhance our proficiency, allowing us to adapt better to a foreign environment.
To summarize, establishing a life in a country where the local language differs from our own presents distinct challenges. However, with the aid of technology and consistent practice, I believe overseas students and workers can effectively overcome these obstacles and thrive.
