The bar chart below shows estimated world illiteracy rates by region and by gender for the last year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given chart illustrates the calculated percentages of illiteracy by gender in different regions around the world in the previous year.
Overall, the number of women who cannot read and write was higher than that of men in all areas. The figures of developed countries were the lowest, while that of South Asia were highest in the chart.
There were three regions where the illiteracy rates can be considered to be on the smaller side: East Asia/Oceania, Latin American/Caribbean and developed countries. As mentioned above, developed countries had the lowest rates, with approximately 1% of male and 2% of female. That of Caribbean, while being in the second lowest position, were almost ten times bigger with 10% and 12%. The percentages of Oceania were not as even as the other two: there were less than 10% of men being illiterate while that of women reached 20%, which was more than twice as much.
The other three areas all had percentages around 30 and above. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab States and South Africa, the rates of illiteracy among men were around 30%, while that of women were approximately 48%, 52% and 56%, respectively. There was a gap around 20% between two genders in all three regions.
