Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that there was an upward trend regarding households living in their own accommodation, whereas the percentage of rented residences decreased significantly.
In 1918, the number of households with rented accommodation was about 78%, nearly fourfold that proportion of owned residences, which was stood at just over 20%. The percentage of households with their own houses then increased steadily, reaching 50% in a 53-year period, whereas on the contrary, rented accommodation fell sharply to 50% in the same time.
From 1971 to 2011, households in owned residences continued rising rapidly, hitting a peak of slightly under 70%, followed by a marginal decline to finish the period at approximately 64%. By contrast, the figure of rented accommodation kept on decreasing until reaching its lowest level at just over 30% before experiencing a slight increase to 35%.
