The bar chart illustrates the percentage of commuters using different means of transport to go to and return from work in a European city in 1960, 1980 and 2000.
In general, there were significant changes in the popularity of several vehicles.
As can be seen from the bar chart, the biggest rise was attributed to cars. Car use accounted for only about 7% in 1960, the lowest among the four modes of transport. However, after a boom of roughly 30% by 2000, it became the most commonly used vehicle among commuters. By contrast, the surveyed period witnessed an enormous drop of around 25% in the percentage of people using buses. As a result, from being the most popular mode of transport in 1960 (slightly under 40%), it had become the least used by the end of the century.
Meanwhile, there were less noticeable trends in the figures for trains and tubes. The first 20 years saw a moderate increase from around 19% to well above 25% in the proportion of the former, followed by a substantial decrease of 5% from 1980 to 2000, whereas the figure for the latter fluctuated around 25% over the 1960-2000 period.
