Summary
In this set of materials, the reading states that there are doubts about whether bees exist on Earth since 200 million years ago and provides some reasons. However, the professor thinks that the proposed ideas of the reading are not convincing and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the essay claims that the fossils of actual bees have never been explored that date to 200 million years ago. On the contrary, the professor says that although it is true that we have not yet had 200-million-year-old fossils of bees, it might be possible that their fossils were preserved by some substances called resin. Meanwhile, since the trees that produce resin were not common 200 million years ago, we cannot conclude that the bees did not exist in that time.
Second, the reading asserts that since the flowering plants are the main source of food for the bees and, also, were just appeared on Earth 125 million years ago, it is not reasonable to think that the bees existed 200 million years ago. To argue with this statement, the professor explains that according to historical evolvement, it is possible that the bees first feed on some other substances and, then, evolve and adapt to utilize flower plants ever since.
Third, the reading declares that the founded structures have lack of usual characteristics of modern bees. The professor casts doubts on this point by saying that the chemical features of these structures tell us that they had some shared quality such as being waterproof with modern bees.
