Toefl writing task one

The reading text and the lecture are both about the Moai statues located in Easter island. The author of the article feels that it lead to decrease and collapse of culture and civilization. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article and says that there are other reasons.

According to the reading passage, a vast amount of valuable trees were cut down for the transfer of statues from its making place to the actual palce. The article mentions that they were rolled by making tracks of wood. This is challenged by the lecturer saying it is not correct. He states that the statues were actually transferred using the ropes by tilting them from side to side. Additionally, he says that men power was used and not the wooden logs from trees.

Secondly, the authors claims that all the palm trees on the island were cut gradually and resulted in deforestation. The lecturer, however asserts that the actual reason behind deforestation was rats. Further, he says that people when immigrated to the island brought rats with them for food. Researchers found the remains of palm seeds that were chewed by rats. He goes on to say that the rats had affected the palm trees and lead to deforestation.

Finally, the author points that there was decline in population because of food shortage. He mentions that population declined from as high as twenty thousands to the lowest at two thousands. The lecturer rebutted that by saying that the estimate was based on an old misunderstanding of when the island was actually originated and settled. He supports his point by saying that there were never more than two thousand people residing there.
