The charts compare five categories of household expenditure in the UK and New Zealand in the year 1980 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear from the illustration that the percentage of expenditure on food and drinks declined significantly in both countries over the period, whereas expenses on utility bills surged.
In 1980, 29% of new zealand household budget went on food and drinks, while the equivalent figure for the UK was 23%. By contrast, both countries experienced a slight increase in expenses on utility bills for the average home, from 27% to 30% in New zealand and from 26% to 28% in England. With regards to in both years, the money on leisure remained higher in the UK as against new Zealand.
Marching forward, a similar amount of money spend on other categories in both years for the UK and New zealand which was 11% and 9% respectively.
