The graph below compares changes in the birth rates of China and the USA between 1920 and 2000.
The line graph illustrates the fertility rates in China and America over the course of 8 decades.
Overall, it is clear that there were some startling parallels between the two countries: lows in the 1940s and highs in the 1950s. It is also pronounced that the birth rates were close until around 1950, then the difference expanded gradually as China’s fertility declined so much many years later.
Starting with China, the birth rate rose form 10% in 1920 to 15% in 1935 before suddenly plummeting to one third of that in 1940s. Years after that, the country saw a dramatic rise, with the peak at 20% in 1950. However, in the second half of the century, the birth rate began to descend sharply.
Moving to the US, fertility ranged from about 10% to 13% until 1940, then witnessed a big fall to 5% in 1945. Five years later, the figure tripled, reaching 15% as the highest rate. The same occurrence also existed in this country: the fertility rate decreased during the rest of the century; nonetheless, it was not as deeply low as that in China.
