The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The bar graph shows information about how many families in England and Wales owned or rented accommodation between two years, 1918 and 2011, with the assessed data given in percentage.
In general, it is observed that increasingly more English people could afford to own a house, but the percentage of rented households dropped significantly over the period in question. An interesting point is that there was a year when the percentages of both types of accommodation met.
Looking at the details, households in owned accommodation started with just above 20% in 1918, then there was a sharp increase to over 30% in 1938. Having remained stable for a year, the figure improved yearly by an average of 8-9%, taking over rented housing after 1971 and hitting a peak at almost 70% in 2001. This was followed by a slight drop to around 75% in 2011.
On the other hand, over three quarters of the residents rented accommodation in 1918, which was the overall highest percentage during the timeline. The data dropped rapidly to under 70% before recovering back in 1939. At that point, it witnessed a gradual fall over half of the decade to just above 30% in 2001 after which there was a marginal increase to around 35%, finishing the period.
