The line graph shows the number of store openings and closures in a given country between 2011 and 2018.
In 2011, there were about 8,500 new stores opening in the country, significantly higher than the number of 6,200 closures. Over the next few years, the number of store closures dropped to a lower level of 4,000 and then partially recovered to around 5,000 and 6,100 respectively in 2013, 2014. Meanwhile new store openings were more stable and rose to a peak of 7,100 in 2013 before reaching roughly the same number of closures in 2014.
After this point, the number of store closures dropped precipitously to just 600 at its lowest point in 2015 before returning to a slightly reduced level and ending the survey period in 2018 at 5,100. In contrast, the number of new stores decreased slightly to about 4,000 between 2015 and 2017 and dropped to 3,000 in 2018.
Overall, we can clearly see that both numbers are down, although openings are most notable. Despite the erratic trends of both categories, towards the end of this period, closures became more common.
