As transport and accommodation problems are increasing in many cities, some governments encourage businesses to move to rural areas. Do the advantages of moving to rural areas outweigh the disadvantages?
As urban centers grapple with mounting transport and housing issues, many governments propose a decentralization approach, nudging businesses towards rural locales. I, however, believe this policy could actually do more harm than good.
Advocates for decentralization often emphasize that shifting businesses to the countryside could effectively mitigate the problem of overcrowding in metropolises. This, in turn, could reduce pressure on city transport and housing systems. Nevertheless, proponents of this scheme often fail to factor in its concomitant adverse impact on rural communities. Specifically, a massive influx of businesses and migrants could strain/ overwhelm local resources and infrastructure, leading to such problems as higher traffic volumes and soaring rental prices in rural locations. Such a relocation proposal, in other words, would not really address transport and housing problems, but rather shifting them from one place to another.
There is also an argument that businesses would benefit financially from such a move, given the lower costs of land and property in rural regions. This perspective, however, is short-sighted/ myopic, overlooking the substantial incurred expenses. For instance, businesses might incur additional costs in constructing facilities from scratch, establishing robust supply chain logistics to counter the isolation of rural areas, and potentially offering higher salaries to entice employees to relocate. The initial savings could quickly be overshadowed by these additional, ongoing costs.
The workforce is another aspect where the negative impacts of rural relocation are pronounced. When a company moves out of the city, its employees may face the difficult decision of whether to follow the business or not. If they choose to relocate, they may need to uproot their families, disrupting their lives and potentially facing a lack of amenities and educational resources in rural areas. For those who choose to stay in the city, even with relocation packages or travel subsidies, their daily commutes can become very long and tiring, leading to decreased job satisfaction and productivity.
In conclusion, while transferring businesses to rural areas presents some benefits, the overall picture suggests that the disadvantages are more significant. The potential harm to rural communities, financial burdens on businesses, and the negative effects on employees' lives tip the balance against this strategy.
