human presence on Venus

Essay topics:

human presence on Venus

The lecture and the reading are both about the possibility to maintain permanent residence of humans on Venus. The author of the reading provides 3 obstacles that prevent human presence. The lecturer argues those three hurdles because he believes mankind can overcome those difficulties by using a floating station which stays at the height of fifty kilometers above the surface of Venus.

First of all, it is mentioned in the reading that atmospheric pressure on Venus is too high for astronauts to survive. He states that the pressure on Venus surface can produce a force of 100 kilograms per square centimeters which can destroy the spacecraft, equipment and humans. The lecturer, however, controverts this idea. He asserts that at the height of fifty kilometers above the surface, pressure applied on the floating station is pretty equal to that of the Earth´s. As such, equipment and humans will not be crushed.

Secondly, the writer suggests that there is no water and oxygen available on Venus because this planet is made up mostly of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and acid. As the result, those vital substances for maintaining life must be regularly supplied from the Earth. However, it is impractical to do so in reality. The lecturer disputes this idea by contending that water and oxygen can be elaborated directly on Venus. Because carbon dioxide is abundant on Venus, it can used to synthesize oxygen and water via various chemical processes.

Thirdly, the reading says that little sunlight can reach the surface of Venus due to the presence of thick clouds and a dense layer of carbon dioxide. The lack of sunlight discourages inhabitants from using solar power cells to produce electricity which is requisite for machines and equipment. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this idea. He puts forth the notion that there is few clouds at the height of fifty kilometers. As the result, there is enough direct sunlight to run solar power cells. Besides, those cells can also absorb reflecting sunlight to make electricity.
