The graph below gives information about the percentage of people living in
Australia who were born in Asia, the UK, and other regions.
The line graph illustrates the proportion of people from Asia, UK and other parts of the world, who are currently living in Australia from 1976 to 2011.
Overall, while the total figure fluctuated, the percentage of people from Asia and Other experienced an upward trend in this period. On the other hand, the data of the UK dropped significantly.
In 1976, almost 15% of people in Australia were from the United Kingdom, the highest of all countries. This rate of Others and Asia was lower, accounting for more than 10% and 3% of the population respectively. From 1976 to 1991, there was a steady growth in the figure of Asian-born, from 3% to about 5%. Whereas, that of the UK and Others dropped significantly, both to about 9%.
At the end of the period, the proportion of Australians who were born in the UK continued to decrease and reached 5%, which was one third of that in 1976. By contrast, the population of Australians who were from Asia rocketed to 15% by 2011. During this period, the figure of Other countries reached a peak of 14% in 2006 then fell to approximately 13%.
