The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of owned and rented English and Welsh accommodation from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the percentage of households that rented and owned their accommodation in England and Wales fluctuated in two opposite trends. It is worth noting that the figure of households rented accommodation was highest in 1918 and lowest in 2001, while that of households owned accommodation was in a reserve order.
The proportion of people owning their accommodation was around 23% in 1918 and fluctuated in an increasing trend over a period of 94 years. This figure rose steadily by 45% and reached a peak at 68% in 2001, then decreased marginally to about 63% in 2011. On the other hand, the percentage of people renting accommodation fluctuated in a decreasing trend between 1918 and 2011. The figure fell considerably from nearly 88% in 1918 to around 31% in 2001. After that, it rose slowly by about 5% after a decade.
From 1918 to 1961, the proportion of households in rented accommodation was higher than that of households owning their accommodation, about 19% to 48%. In 1971, the figures accounted for the same rate, at 50%. Then, the percentage of people having their own accommodation experienced an increase and was more than that of those renting accommodation, up to 38%.
